Virtual Reality Gaming Indie Game Action Game Early Access Pc GamesThe Phoenix Gene, HEROmation's debut title, is set to launch on Meta Quest on June 5, 2025, for $24.99. This narrative-driven VR shooter places players in the role of Firestorm, a rebirthing Phoenix, tasked with protecting Jackie, a young janitor, from mutants, drones, and other dangers. The game is built by a team of industry veterans and indie creators, combining dynamic third-person shooting with a rich multiverse narrative.
The Phoenix Gene features a unique on-rails system that allows players to move physically with their body, dodge hazards, and react in real-time. Firestorm's health is reflected in the Phoenix's body, eliminating the need for traditional HUD elements. The game's most powerful ability is realm toggling, which lets players shift between two dimensions in real-time, absorbing bullets, accessing hidden elements, and navigating dual-layered combat zones.
The game features eight diverse levels across alternate timelines, blending post-apocalyptic horror with biotech sci-fi and narrative symbolism. Players can upgrade abilities, collect gold flames, and battle mutated bosses. The Phoenix Gene offers comfort settings for all playstyles, including snap turn, smooth turn, vignette, and dual-scale support for sitting or standing play.
The game's developers include Michael Cawood and Julie Pifher Cawood, industry veterans with credits across various titles, including Skylanders Giants, Starfox Adventures, Kameo, Bumblebee, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Pete's Dragon, and the Oscar-qualified animated short The Wrong Rock. The Phoenix Gene features programming by Rare veteran Phil Woods and a sweeping, cinematic soundtrack by BAFTA-nominated composer Grant Kirkhope.
In summary, The Phoenix Gene is a highly anticipated VR shooter that combines dynamic gameplay mechanics with a rich narrative and a unique multiverse setting. The game's unique features, such as realm toggling and on-rails movement, offer a fresh take on the VR shooter genre, while the development team's experience promises a polished and engaging experience.
