The historical true crime investigation game is set in the Noir era of post-World War II and is inspired by the efforts of Frankfurt Attorney General Fritz Bauer. Players will assume the role of young prosecutor Esther Katz, who is determined to uncover the truth about the dark past and ensure it does not shape the future.
"The Darkest Files" has already won the "Most Promising Game" and "Most Anticipated Game" Awards at Indie Cup Germany 2023. The Kickstarter campaign, launching on March 19th, 2024, at 4 pm GMT+1, aims to secure additional funding for the game's next development phase and provide an opportunity for fans to become more involved in the creation process. By participating in the campaign, backers can contribute to the game's balancing and influence creative decisions.
Paintbucket Games, founded in 2018 by industry veterans Jörg Friedrich and Sebastian St. Schulz, consists of around 15 developers dedicated to humanitarian values and opposition to hate and discrimination. The studio's first game, "Through the Darkest of Times," received worldwide acclaim, earning several awards and a nomination for "Games for Impact" at The Game Awards.
"The Darkest Files" is a spiritual successor to "Through the Darkest of Times" and promises an immersive experience that respects history while engaging players in a narrative that feels urgent and relevant today. The game is set before the Auschwitz trials and follows Esther Katz as she investigates crimes from World War II.
Paintbucket Games' mission is to create games that both entertain and educate, offering respectful engagements with past and present issues. To support "The Darkest Files" and learn more about the Kickstarter campaign, visit
