Ziggurat Interactive, a publisher of retro and modern games, has announced the re-release of the side-scrolling shoot 'em up game, Rendering Ranger: R² [Rewind]. The game, which was originally released for the Super Famicom in 1995, will be available on PC, PlayStation 4|5, and Nintendo Switch in early 2025. A physical edition of the game will also be available for all platforms, in partnership with Limited Run Games.

Rendering Ranger: R² is known for its pre-rendered graphics, challenging mechanics, and detailed visual design. It was created by Manfred Trenz, the mastermind behind Turrican, The Great Giana Sisters, and Katakis (AKA Denaris). The game was initially intended for a Western release under the name Targa but was ultimately distributed exclusively in Japan, making it a highly sought-after collectible among retro gaming fans.

The re-release of Rendering Ranger: R² [Rewind] will feature the unreleased prototype Targa, the Japan-only release Rendering Ranger: R², the ability to rewind the game, the option to save and continue, and an optional CRT filter for a retro look and feel. The game will launch digitally and physically on PC (via Steam and GOG), PlayStation 4 & 5, and Nintendo Switch in early 2025.

The original Rendering Ranger: R² is renowned for its technical achievements and unique visual style, as it pushed the Super Famicom to its limits, utilizing the console’s tech in ways that were unheard of for its time. The game's challenging mechanics and detailed visual design have made it a favorite among collectors and retro gaming fans, and its limited release further cemented its reputation as a highly sought-after classic, often regarded as "one of the most expensive SNES games."
