The new expansion for Crusader Kings III, Khans of the Steppe, allows players to explore the nomadic culture and society of the Eurasian steppe. This core expansion features new mechanics designed to reflect the unique culture of Asia's nomadic tribes, including the accumulation of herds, migration in search of better pastures, and establishing oneself as the Great Khan.

The Nomadic Government mechanic focuses on the lifeblood of the people, the herd, and governs the realm through migration and increasing dominance. The new Steppe Region features a Season system that changes the fertility of the lands over time, forcing players to adapt and migrate. The Tributaries System allows for more flexible subject relationships, granting unique benefits for both overlords and subjects.

Khans of the Steppe offers a Mongolian flavor, including a new Bookmark as Temüjin, the young and ambitious Genghis Khan, and the Mongolian succession type. The expansion also features new activities and traditions, such as the Kurultai council and new year’s celebrations with Tsagaan Sar.
