Card Coder: Craft Your Own Roguelike Card Battles, Coming 2025

On January 14, 2025, Maximilian Scherer, a computer science professor and indie developer, announced his new game, Card Coder, which will be available on Steam. This card-building roguelike game combines tactical card battles with strategic inventory management, allowing players to create their own custom cards during gameplay. The game features over 10 billion possibilities for card customization, enabling players to build cards that fit their playstyle.

Card Coder's main innovation is the ability for players to define the exact behavior of their cards by combining four different types of ability components: trigger, condition, selector, and effect. Additionally, players can customize the visuals of their cards by choosing from beautiful pixelart characters included in the game or any images on their own computer.

The game's card battles are tactical and require positioning and building synergies and combos on the board. The default game mode is a roguelike run, with a series of increasingly difficult battles. After each battle, players can loot gold, new cards, and components, and the shopping and card-building phase between battles allows players to upgrade, rework, and finetune their cards and deck.

Card Coder is planned to release in late 2025/early 2026 and players can wishlist the game on Steam. A presskit is available on Prof. Scherer's website. Prof. Scherer has a PhD in computer science and is a professor for business information systems at DHBW Mannheim Germany. He started his own solo venture in 2022 to develop games that combine programming and strategy elements. His debut title, JOY OF PROGRAMMING, was released in 2024.
