Studio Atelico, a gaming startup founded by industry veterans, has announced the Atelico AI Engine, a new AI solution designed to bring Generative AI (GenAI) to video games. The engine runs on-device, reducing costs for developers and providing full control and flexibility through its modular design. This is in contrast to current cloud-based solutions, which can be prohibitively expensive and lack the fine-grained control needed for game development.

The Atelico AI Engine uses specially-tuned small models that are optimized for gaming-specific tasks, providing high-quality performance while minimizing the impact on device resources. The team has built a tech demo, called the Generative Agents Realtime Playground (GARP), to showcase the capabilities of the engine. GARP is a simulated village with autonomous characters that plan their days, make decisions, and engage in conversation, all based on their backgrounds and experiences.
